10 Rules How to Make a Cool Photo Book

Here are the ten (self-imposed) rules I followed when I created my book "Point of View New York City". See the highlights from my lecture at the B&H Event Space, edited to just under 15 minutes. True to the book's subtitle "A Visual Game of the City You THINK You Know" I'll show sample pictures and explain how I put the book together. [originally posted 1-14-2016]

Highlight version at 14:56

If you want to see the whole lecture, please see the full version on Youtube. I know, it runs at at 1:04:58, but bear with me, there is lots to see. Let me know what you think, in a comment either here or right over there on the Youtube page.

Memorial Day Weekend Brings POVNYC to Governors Island

"Point of View New York City" travels to Governors Island for the Memorial Day weekend! I will present my book with a slide show on Saturday, May 27th, at 3pm sharp, and will sign copies that are for sale right there. So, how about a little NYC staycation? Grab a ferry at the Maritime Building (free until, 11.30 am, then $2), enjoy the island in New York Harbor, see the old forts and the newfangled park, and enjoy some literature on New York.

The Empire State Center for the Book welcomes authors and writers who live and work in New York City for two days of talks, discussion, and book signings. All events are free and open to the public, and held at Governors Island Quarters 4B in Nolan Park, an 1855 former officer’s house. This is the pop-up location for the center and the New York State Writers Hall of Fame. [Google map directions from the ferry]

The diverse group of writers represents New York City in biography, fiction, history, illustration, non-fiction, and photography. Books and illustrations will be for sale at the house.

I will give a presentation on Saturday, 3pm, at the Empire State Center for the Book. For the full schedule of all writers, please head over to the Empire State Center for the Book.

In Other News: Sailing

Today you won't see part of my book Point of View New York City, but certainly New York City seen from a very specific point of view. A friend gave me access to his 12th floor apartment on the waterfront in Lower Manhattan, right under the races courses for the America's Cup which was in town the first time since 1920. I simply couldn't let the opportunity slip to see some top notch stadium sailing right in front of me.

Here are some photos from the races on Sunday, May 8th. Find the whole set in this album on my Flickr pages.

March Exhibition in New York's Municipal Building

The Gallery of the Borough President of Manhattan, Gale Brewer, is hosting an exhibition of Point of View New York City in March 2016. Next to pictures from the book and other views of New York, the show will feature some small planets from American and European urbanscapes and landscapes.

What better place could there be for this show than the 19th floor of the Municipal Building, looming high over the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, with sweeping views over Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn? So come and join us, the gallery is open to the public.

The book can be purchased right downstairs at the NYC CityStore (or a number of good places). Prints are for sale right here in the exhibition (or get directly in touch with me per email.)

Please see the following flyer with all the important information, otherwise you might not get in!
See you up there!
